Electric-powered vehicles have been gaining popularity for more than two decades now. Beginning with hybrids, now the automotive industry is flooding with plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles. With EVs on the rise, customers have many questions about them. Some of these questions refer to efficiency, as increasing efficiency is the main goal of electric vehicles. An EVs efficiency is measured by MPGe. To gain a better understanding of what that is, continue reading below!

What Does MPGe Stand For?

With electric power becoming more popular, the Environmental Protection Agency, more commonly known as the EPA, decided it was needed to come up with a measurement of the efficiency of electric vehicles to help consumers better understand it. In 2010, MPGe was created. MPGe stands for miles per gallon gas equivalent. It is the measurement of how many miles you can drive on the electric equivalent of one gallon of gas. Instead of gallons of gasoline, electric power is measured in kilowatts of electricity. When shopping for an all-electric vehicle, you'll notice that just the MPGe is listed on the window sticker, as it is void of a gas-powered engine. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrids show both MPG and MPGe, as they can use gas-only, all-electric, or hybrid power.

How Did the EPA Determine MPGe?

The EPA is the government agency responsible for determining the fuel economy and environmental impact of a vehicle. For cars that use a traditional internal combustion engine, this is done by driving the car to see how many miles it can drive using one single gallon of gas under normal driving conditions. However, before doing this with an electric vehicle, scientists had to figure out the measurement of kilowatts that was equivalent to one gallon of gasoline. The answer that they came up with was 33.7-kilowatt hours (kWh). For example, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has an MPGe of 56 when using a combination of gas and electric power. On a plug-in hybrid's window sticker, you will also see the MPG, total driving range, and all-electric driving range. For example, the Grand Cherokee 4xe offers 23 miles per gallon using only the internal combustion engine, a total driving range of 470 miles, and a 25-mile electric-only driving range.
