Engine and Drivetrain Options for the Jeep Cherokee
The Jeep Cherokee is eligible for three engines. As standard equipment, you’ll find a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine under the hood, delivering 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine is optional, pushing out 271 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Also available is a 3.2L V6 engine that delivers 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque. All three engines are paired with a smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard equipment for the Jeep Cherokee. However, here in Ohio, you’ll most commonly find a Jeep Cherokee 4x4, as the 4x4 drivetrain is better for handling our harsh winters. Active Drive is an on-demand 4x4 system. While driving on smooth, dry roads, Active Drive will run in front-wheel drive, maximizing fuel economy. When you encounter inclement road conditions, Active Drive will engage the rear wheels, driving all four wheels to help maintain traction. Active Drive II operates similarly but employs a two-speed transfer case, allowing drivers to select between 4-high and 4-low drive modes. Lastly, the Trailhawk trim comes exclusively with Active Drive Lock, which adds a locking rear differential to keep the rear wheels moving at the same speed, enhancing traction while off-roading.
