While offering plenty of space for passengers and cargo, the Cherokee is perfectly suited for off-road adventures or city living. While it has been redesigned many times since its introduction, the Cherokee has never failed to impress the masses. If the Jeep Cherokee is the vehicle you’re looking for, please continue reading below to learn more about the Cherokee and why you should consider buying one used!
Jeep Cherokee Standard and Available Features
The Jeep Cherokee is well-equipped with a stylish and functional design. Outside the entry-level Latitude trim, you’ll find a backup camera, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, and heated/power-adjustable side mirrors. Inside the Cherokee Latitude, you'll find a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, front vanity mirrors, a 7-inch touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Selecting a higher trim level of the Jeep Cherokee gets you things like heated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, navigation, remote start, LED headlights and taillights, cornering LED fog lights, a power liftgate, Nappa leather upholstery, roof rails, and more.
Engine and Drivetrain Options for the Jeep Cherokee
The Jeep Cherokee is eligible for three engines. As standard equipment, you’ll find a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine under the hood, delivering 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine is optional, pushing out 271 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Also available is a 3.2L V6 engine that delivers 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque. All three engines are paired with a smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard equipment for the Jeep Cherokee. However, here in Ohio, you’ll most commonly find a Jeep Cherokee 4x4, as the 4x4 drivetrain is better for handling our harsh winters. Active Drive is an on-demand 4x4 system. While driving on smooth, dry roads, Active Drive will run in front-wheel drive, maximizing fuel economy. When you encounter inclement road conditions, Active Drive will engage the rear wheels, driving all four wheels to help maintain traction. Active Drive II operates similarly but employs a two-speed transfer case, allowing drivers to select between 4-high and 4-low drive modes. Lastly, the Trailhawk trim comes exclusively with Active Drive Lock, which adds a locking rear differential to keep the rear wheels moving at the same speed, enhancing traction while off-roading.
Should I Buy a Jeep Cherokee Used?
Buying used is a great way to get into the Jeep Cherokee you want at a price that you can afford. There are two reasons for this. First, used cars are cheaper than new ones because of the new car depreciation. In most cases, new cars depreciate by about 20% in the first year after being driven off the lot and by as much as 40% within the first three years. However, after the first three years, the depreciation slows down. In most cases, cars that are three years or older depreciate at a rate of approximately 10% each additional year. This gives the vehicle’s second owner the opportunity to enjoy more of the vehicle’s value for longer.
