When Should I Get My Grand Cherokee's First Oil Change?

Jeep recommends giving your Grand Cherokee its first oil change at around 8,000 miles. Going forward, this same interval should be used for each oil and filter change. By removing the old oil and replacing it with new oil, oil changes prevent sludge buildup and allow the oil to continue to provide the level of lubrication it is intended to. The filter is designed to prevent contaminants from entering the engine and is replaced with each oil change. It is also recommended to have your Grand Cherokee's tires rotated at each oil change to extend the life of the tires. The weight of the Grand Cherokee's engine and transmission falls almost entirely on the front axle, creating more pressure on the front tires. This pressure causes them to wear down faster than the rear tires. To even out the wear on the tires, it is recommended to rotate the tires with each oil change. The Grand Cherokee's oil change interval is subject to a few factors. For example, if you use your Grand Cherokee for off-roading or towing, it's recommended that you bring it in for an oil change sooner, around 6,000 miles, as these activities cause more strain on the engine.

16,000 Miles

Your Grand Cherokee will be due for its second oil change at the 16,000-mile mark under normal driving conditions. In addition to the routine oil change and tire rotation, a technician may recommend a few other maintenance items and services. The cooling system is often due for inspection at the 16,000-mile mark. The technician will ensure that the cooling lines are free from cracks or leaks and that the coolant reservoir is properly filled. The technician will also inspect your Grand Cherokee's air filters. These filters, one for the cabin and one for the engine are designed to prevent dirt, debris, and other contaminants from entering their respective area. Like the engine oil, these will likely need to be replaced more frequently if you spend time off-roading.

32,000 Miles

After another two oil changes and 16,000 miles, there are a few additional items you should consider. First and most important is the braking system. When you bring in your Grand Cherokee for its 32,000-mile service, a technician will closely inspect the braking system, all the way from the brake booster to the rotors with the fluid lines, fluid reservoir, calipers, and pads in between to ensure your safety. The steering and suspension systems will also be inspected for excessive wear. Finally, your Grand Cherokee's spark plugs, in place to ignite the air/fuel mixture inside the engine's cylinders, will also be evaluated. As these age, they are susceptible to carbon buildup, which can lead to a misfire, triggering the check engine light, and even complete cylinder failure if ignored. Jeep recommends having these checked approximately every 30,000 miles and replaced no later than 50,000 miles.

60,000 Miles and Beyond

As you cross the 60,000-mile mark, it's time to consider the aforementioned services and checks performed at 32,000 miles. Under normal driving conditions, the Grand Cherokee's brakes should be replaced at or before 60,000 miles. This is the service in which the technician will take a look at the driveline, including the transmission, transfer case, and the front and rear differentials. These gearboxes are filled with fluid similar to engine oil, and they do the same job: lubricating the moving components. And just like engine oil, this fluid can break down and fail to provide the proper level of lubrication for the gears. Also, it may be due for replacing sooner if you use your Grand Cherokee for off-roading or towing, like engine oil. The technician will also inspect the axle shafts and bushings, as loose fluid or grease can be an indication of a leak, which would require further inspection.
