About Fremont Ohio

The county seat of Sandusky County, Ohio is the city of Fremont. During the early 1800s, the U.S. Army built Fort Sandusky which was later renamed Fort Stephenson along the lower part of the Sandusky River. The fort was built to protect an important supply depot when tensions with Great Britain started to rise. British forces later attacked the fort during the War of 1812 and the Battle of Fort Stephenson ensued. With the battle won, a settlement started to flourish around the fort. The area around the fort was first known as Lower Sandusky due to its location on the Sandusky River. In 1849 the city's name was changed to Fremont in honor of John C. Fremont.
