2022 Wagoneer vs Ford Expedition

Shopping for your next SUV is no easy task. There are a staggering number of options available, which can be both a good thing and a bad thing when it comes to vehicle research. Though it’s nice to have a wide selection, things can get tricky when the choices become overwhelming, and you lose sight of what each model actually has to offer. In an effort to provide a bit of insight, we’ll be comparing two compelling options in the three-row SUV segment to help you decide which one best fits your unique needs. The first option is the 2022 Wagoneer, and the second is the 2021 Ford Expedition. The Wagoneer pairs luxurious features with off-road capability, while the Expedition has a classic look with a few updates for 2021. To learn more about each of these SUVs and all their features, keep reading.

2022 Wagoneer Power & Handling

The 2022 Wagoneer is available in two different trim levels, the Series II and the Series III. Both of these models feature a 5.7-liter V8 engine, as well as an eTorque mild-hybrid system powered by a 48-volt battery. The Wagoneer also features an 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, and uses rear-wheel drive as the standard drivetrain. 4-wheel drive is also available to both the Series II and Series III, and drivers can take their pick of three powerful 4X4 systems, the Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, or Quadra-Drive II. In terms of capability, the Wagoneer boasts a whopping 10,000-pound maximum towing capacity when properly equipped, 24 inches of water-fording capability, and the ability to take on all conditions with the Selec-Terrain Traction Management System.

2021 Ford Expedition Power & Handling

The 2021 Ford Expedition features five trim levels, all of which are powered by the same 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbocharged engine. This engine provides the Expedition with 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, with the exception of the top-tier Platinum trim which has a bit of a boost up to 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. Like the Wagoneer, the Expedition also has standard rear-wheel drive, though the other option is all-wheel drive rather than 4-wheel drive. The Expedition also can’t quite live up to the standards in capability set by the Wagoneer, with a maximum towing capacity of 9,300 pounds, and no significant water-fording of off-road capability. For everyday drives, though, it does provide an adequately smooth and stable drive that is relatively easy to maneuver despite its large size.

2022 Wagoneer Features & Design

The Wagoneer has a stylish and refined design that honors its American craftsmanship. The exterior has an athletic stance with up to 22-inch wheels, and acoustic laminated glass on the front windshield. Inside, the Wagoneer seats up to eight passengers, and has standard Nappa leather-trimmed seats. The front seats are heated and ventilated with an available built-in massage feature, and the dashboard is high-tech with a standard 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen. The Uconnect 5 offers multiple user profiles, standard wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The Wagoneer also has standard safety features like rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and much more.

2021 Ford Expedition Features & Design

The Ford Expedition is a three-row SUV that seats up to eight passengers. For the 2021 model year, Ford rolled out a new trim level, the XL, which is now the base-level trim for the lineup. The XL is a bit of an outlier in that it only seats five passengers, and also lacks the same 8-inch infotainment touchscreen as the other models, instead offering a relatively bare-bones 4.5-inch display. Moving up from the XL, you can find features like 8-passenger seating, tri-zone automatic climate control, and leather interior. Other features on the upper trim levels include wood interior accents, power-folding third-row seats, and massage features for the front row. Some of the Expedition’s standard safety features are automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist.

Conclusion:

If you find yourself deciding between the Wagoneer and the Ford Expedition, the 2022 Wagoneer is undoubtedly the way to go. This SUV has unmatched capability from its towing capacity to its off-road athleticism. All that is paired with a comfortable and accommodating interior that gives all eight passengers the VIP treatment.
