Jeep's 80th model year has brought some of the brand's most exciting updates. One of which is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe! The 4xe is the world's first plug-in hybrid Wrangler making it not only one of the most capable off-road vehicles on the market, but also the most efficient! Even with its 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of instant torque, the Wrangler 4xe provides drivers with a 379-mile driving range, 49 MPG, and up to 21 miles of fully electric driving. Keep reading below to learn more about Jeep's first endeavor into the hybrid market!

RANGE

SAY GOODBYE TO RANGE ANXIETY

Whether you want to take off-road adventure to new places or simply get around town on all-electric power, the Wrangler 4xe is ready with an EPA estimated 49 MPGe rating. E-Selec driving modes that utilize Power Routing enable you to optimize performance while eliminating range anxiety.

SEIZE THE DRIVE

E-Selec driving modes put you in control. Electric Mode uses only battery power for low-emissions zones in cities or quiet off-roading with maximum torque and horsepower, while eSave Mode reserves battery power for later. Hybrid Mode gives you the best of both worlds. Preproduction model shown.

HYBRID TECHNOLOGY

HYBRID MODE

The default mode, Hybrid, combines torque from both the 2.0L turbocharged engine and the electric motors. This combination provides maximum horsepower, instant torque and the best acceleration. Electric power is consumed first.

ELECTRIC MODE

When the battery has more than a 1% charge, it can run in Electric Mode. This allows for nearly zero tailpipe emissions up to highway speeds. The vehicle can run in this mode for up to 21 miles.

CAPABILITY

A 4X4 FIRST AND FOREMOST

The Wrangler 4xe system is paired with a 2.0L I4 DOHC direct-injection Turbo PHEV engine to bring out the best in already proven Jeep® Brand 4x4 capability. A 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, regenerative brake booster and eight-speed automatic transmission work together to send impressive amounts of power and torque to each wheel, maximizing the capability of every component. The sealed and waterproof battery pack and electronics even perform in tough conditions like fording creeks and streams up to 30 inches in depth. Preproduction model shown.

POWER THROUGH

Climb over tough obstacles and go an electrifying 0-60 mph in 6 seconds. A plug-in hybrid turbocharged engine gives the Wrangler 4xe an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of instant torque for heart-pounding performance off-road and on-road.

What powers the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe?

The 4xe employs a 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 integrated with two electric generators. There is also a 400-volt battery pack underneath the rear seat. This plug-in hybrid setup gives the Wrangler 4xe 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The 4xe hybrid system will employ E-Selec drive modes to put drivers in control of the hybrid system. Drivers can choose between Hybrid, Electric, and E-save modes. In addition to a traditional charging plug, the 4xe also employs regenerative braking to charge the battery while the vehicle is in use.

What are some standard features of the Wrangler 4xe?

The 2021 4xe has three of its own trim levels. First and foremost, the Wrangler 4xe is still a Wrangler! It provides the iconic open-air freedom and off-road capability that is to be expected of the Wrangler. It also comes well-equipped with some top-level features like an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, a 9-speaker Alpine premium audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and leather-trimmed upholstery. And that's just the standard features on the entry-level Sahara! The Rubicon focuses on off-road capability, while the High Altitude focuses on comfort and convenience with quilted leather-trimmed seats, 20-inch alloy wheels, body-colored fender flares, and more!

How Capable is the 4xe?

As we mentioned before, the 4xe is still a Wrangler! This means it comes out of the factory as one of the most capable vehicles on the market! For starters, the Wrangler comes with standard 4x4 with a Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio and Dana 44 heavy-duty front and rear axles. With the raised suspension, high air intake, sealed electrical connections, and the battery pack under the rear seat, the Wrangler 4xe can navigate through up to 30 inches of water. The Rubicon 4xe is similar to the gas-powered Wrangler Rubicon with Tru-Lok locking front and rear differentials, a Rock-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 4:1 low-range gear ratio, high clearance fender flares, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and more. The biggest advantage that the 4xe has is the instantly available 470 lb-ft of torque. Being instantly available, there isn't a need to build up RPMs to move the wheels. This makes the Wrangler 4xe easier than ever to maneuver over rugged terrain.
