One of the most popular vehicle types in America is the SUV, and two of the best are the Jeep Compass and the Ford Escape. Both of these vehicles are terrific, with the Jeep Compass's superior off-road ability and the Ford Escape's sporty handling and excellent versatility. 2019 Jeep Compass Handling Dynamics

The Jeep Compass comes with a 2.4-liter engine with 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque which paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission on the lower level trims and a nine-speed automatic on the Limited and Trailhawk. Choosing the Compass with an automatic transmission means you also get stop/start technology, which will idle the engine when it comes to a complete stop. Front-wheel-drive is the standard, but the Compass has the option of four-wheel-drive. When equipped with four-wheel-drive the Jeep Compass can tow up to 2,000 pounds.

2019 Ford Escape Handling Dynamics

There are a few engine options available for the Escape tied to specific trims. The base Ford S comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 168 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque with front-wheel-drive only. The Ford Escape SE and the SEL go with a 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine with 179 horsepower which comes with four-wheel-drive. The highest level Titanium model uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with the Ecoboost and four-wheel-drive. These engines with the Ecoboost get good gas milage but pale in comparison to the stop/start technology of the Compass.

2019 Jeep Compass Interior/Exterior Features

The Jeep Compass comes in four trim levels and offers some terrific features even at its base level. The Sport comes with keyless entry and push-button start, a rearview camera, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and six speakers. Higher trim levels include terrific features such as automatic headlights, cornering fog lights, 17-inch wheels, illuminated vanity mirrors, leather interior, and dual-zone climate control. The powerful off-road Trailhawk provides you with off-road-oriented tires, a raised suspension, and its own Selec-Terrain system that helps it go over steep ascents and rocky surfaces. The top-rated Limited gets you an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

2019 Ford Escape Interior/Exterior Features

Also coming in four trim levels, the Ford Escape gives you features such as cruise control, a rearview camera, 6-way adjustable driver's seat, and automatic headlights with the base level S. Higher trim levels include features such as dual-zone climate control, 10-way-power driver's seat, heated front seats, power tailgate, and Reverse Sensing System. Ford also provides a FordPass Connect system with built-in Wi-Fi and the ability to lock and unlock the car from your phone. The highest trim level is Titanium and gives you features such as a hands-free tailgate, heated steering wheel, power passenger seat, and navigation.

Conclusions

Both vehicles have their merits, but in the end, the Jeep Compass seems to hold a slight edge. While both engines are terrific, we love the stop/start technology of the Compass. And while the Escape gives you some great technological features they pail in comparison to Jeeps Uconnect system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
